Olivia Benson, Hank Voight Almost Got Together in SVU, Chicago PD Crossover
Anything is possible in Dick Wolf’s universe – including relationships across its first responder shows. But a few years ago, some viewers might recall an intimate moment between two leads of Law & Order: SVU and Chicago P.D. Did Olivia Benson and Hank Voight almost get together in SVU? We have the details below.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (known as Law & Order: SVU or just SVU), is NBC’s crime drama created and produced by Dick Wolf’s Wolf Entertainment. It’s the first spin-off of Law & Order and follows a group of specially trained detectives in the New York City Police Department that investigate sexually related crimes. Mariska Hargitay has portrayed Commanding Officer Olivia Benson of the Manhattan Special Victims Unit since the very first season aired in 1999.
Also a Dick Wolf production, Chicago P.D. – a spin-off of Chicago Fire and Chicago Med – is NBC’s fictional drama that follows the personal and professional lives of patrol officers and Intelligence Unit detectives in the Chicago Police Department’s 21st District. Jason Beghe plays the role of Sergeant Henry “Hank” Voight, the chief of the Chicago P.D.’s Intelligence Unit. He’s starred in the series since Season 1 and is expected to return for Season 11 (which is now slated to come back in 2024).
The Dick Wolf shows often do crossovers with one another, and during those episodes, sometimes characters fall in love. Just take fan-favorite couple Mouch from Chicago Fire (Christian Stolte) and Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) from Chicago P.D. Chicago Fire’s Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) also briefly dated Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush) as well. There are quite a few examples of crossover relationships, but there’s one couple we can’t believe almost got together.
Did Olivia Benson and Hank Voight almost get together in SVU?
Did Olivia Benson and Hank Voight almost get together in SVU? The answer is yes, Olivia Benson and Hank Voight almost got together during a crossover episode between SVU and Chicago P.D. back in 2015.
In Chicago P.D.’s Season 2, Episode 20 (“Number of Rats”) and SVU’s Season 16, Episode 20 (“Daydream Believer”), Captain Olivia Benson and Detective Fin Tutuola (Ice-T) go to Chicago to team up with Voight, Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda), when a Chicago murder looks similar to an unsolved one from a decade prior.
The SVU and P.D. units teamed up to track down a serial killer named Gregory Yates, who was based on serial killer Ted Bundy, according to SVU showrunner Warren Leight. “A guy who got away with dozens of crimes in multiple locations for a long period of time because no one could believe he could do something like this and no one put the pieces together,” Leight told Entertainment Weekly in April 2015. “I want to make sure there’s a compelling reason for P.D. to be wandering around the SVU squad, so if one of their own is taken hostage by this guy, after we’ve seen how horrible he is, we understand their pursuit across the time zone.”
Benson and the rest of the detectives work together to try to uncover the identity of the murderer. They finally learn that the killings took place in New York in 2044 and the suspect was wearing medical clothing. Also in the episode, CPD administrative assistant Nadia Decotis (who was close to P.D.’s Erin Lindsay) is kidnapped, tortured and murdered by Yates.
As for Benson and Voight’s relationship, in the episode, Leight explained that the pair clashed heads a few times on purpose. “Sometimes Voight goes a little rogue and [Benson] basically tells him, ‘Watch yourself. I don’t want this case blown because of police misconduct,’ So we wrote to the fact that one department plays more loosely than the other when it comes to constitutional protections. Our guys get a little tense about that; a little more protective of the system,” Leight told The Hollywood Reporter in April 2015.
The last time Benson was in Chicago, the pair shared a friendly drink together. Beghe even admitted to THR that there was “flirtation” between the two. “There was a lot of warmth, maybe even could be construed as flirtation,” the lead actor said. “Things get so serious and rough by the time we’re back in New York that we don’t have a lot of time for the lighter enjoyment of things. It’s a very distressing and personally wrenching experience particularly for the characters in Chicago.”
Now that Elliot Stabler (Chris Meloni) is back on Organized Crime, what fans really want is Benson and Stabler to get together. After all, it’s been 24 years since SVU first premiered and there’s a whole lot of history there.
