Ridge Decides to Let Eric Die Peacefully

At the hospital, Finn tells Ridge he has the medical power of attorney and will have to make the decision. Do they go all out to save Eric, or transfer him to comfort care and let him go? Ridge says, “I love my dad so much. Too much to put him through all of this. We have to let him go.” Steffy and Donna look horrified. Ridge tells Finn that what’s he’s suggesting is experimenting on his dad and there are no guarantees. Steffy and Brooke argue that there’s a chance he could pull through. Donna intones, “I am begging you. If you love your father…” Ridge snaps, “If I love my father? Is that what you said?!” He tells Finn he doesn’t want to put him through anymore pain, “I want him to go peacefully.”

In Eric’s hospital room, he is hooked up to a breathing machine.

At Forrester, Zende asks if there’s anything from Thorne or Bridget. Hope says not yet, and they need to give them some time. Zende feels they’re being left in the dark. Carter argues that they’re not in the dark, for all they know he could still be alive. Hope reminds them that Bridget warned there wasn’t much they could do for Eric. Zende doesn’t believe that — he will fight until there’s no fight left in him. Thomas intones, “Unless there is no fight left in him.”

Zende looks at Eric’s latest sketches and marvels about his genius. Hope says his work and his legacy will live on. Carter can’t stop thinking about the difficult position Ridge could find himself in with the medical power of attorney.

In the hospital, Donna fumes that Finn is offering Eric a way out and Ridge is refusing to even consider it. Steffy agrees. They should be fighting for him. They can’t just let him die. Ridge argues that he didn’t want any extraordinary means to extend his life. Donna is forced to admit that’s true. She begs him not to let this be the end of his father, “Please.” Steffy shakes her head and cries. Tears well up in Ridge’s eyes.

At Forrester, Carter confirms to Thomas that Eric never discussed the medical power of attorney with Ridge. Thomas muses that he was focused on living, not dying. He respects the hell out of him for that, but he can’t fathom his father having to decide whether his grandfather lives or dies. Zende hollers that they can’t let him go. Hope argues it has to be a fulfilling life that Eric would want to live.

In his hospital room, Eric breathes on the ventilator.

In the corridor, Steffy asks Finn if he thinks he can save her grandfather. Finn says Ridge is right in that the treatment is experimental, but he believes this could make a change in Eric. He’s been working on this ever since he found out about Eric’s diagnosis. He would be giving them all false hope if he told them this would give Eric the quality of life he’s used to. Ridge says his dad was very specific about the quality of life he wanted. Donna asks if he’ll just stand there and play God by deciding if Eric gets to live or die. Ridge gets that she’s heartbroken, he would like to just go home and have a martini with his father. He doesn’t have a voice, but he gave him a voice. “I don’t want this for him. I know this is hard, not just for you. I want him to go. I don’t want him to be in pain anymore,” he cries. Tears stream from Steffy’s eyes and Donna holds her head in her hands.

Steffy tells her dad that she hears what he’s saying, “No one wants Granddad to suffer, but think about Finn and me… we were shot and left to die.” Ridge says it’s not the same thing. Donna argues that he has a chance. Brooke interjects that this is difficult for Ridge, “He’s in a difficult position.” Ridge declares that he’s going in to see his dad.

In the Forrester office, Thomas says the office was where Eric built his empire and made his mark. They find his stash of jelly beans and share a laugh as Zende says he’s never seen him as proud as when he won the fashion challenge and got back behind his desk. Carter tells Zende how proud his grandfather is of him. Thomas tells Carter he’s proud of him too. Carter reflects that none of them want to lose him.

Ridge enters Eric’s hospital room, followed by Brooke, Donna, Steffy, and Finn. Ridge says it’s not right that he has all of these tubes coming out of him. “Dad wouldn’t want this.” He flashes to Eric telling him to promise that when the time comes he’ll let him go naturally and peacefully. He says, “It’s time. It’s time to say goodbye.”

In the office, as Thomas looks at a photo of Eric, Hope tells him that Eric will always be special to her but he is his grandfather. “I know how difficult this must be for you.” Thomas says that since he found out his grandfather was dying, it didn’t seem real. “This is too soon.” Hope says it always is when it’s someone you love. Thomas never doubted whether he loved him or wanted the best for him… and now he might not be around. Hope knows it’s not the same, “But you have me. I’m here for you, Thomas.” They kiss and embrace.

In Eric’s hospital room, Donna tells Eric, “You’re so strong and you’re such a fighter. I’m going to fight for you because you can’t fight for yourself right now.” She glares at Ridge. Brooke isn’t sure she agrees with Ridge on this, but he’s trying to do what he feels is best for his father. Donna fumes, “Don’t you tell me what is best for Eric. Don’t you dare! I have been with him 24/7 for months. For months! I know what he would want. He would want to be with his family. He would want to be here right now with us. He would want to finish his collection with RJ. That’s what he would want.” Steffy says, “Dad, I think Donna’s right. I think that’s what Granddad would want.” Ridge says Donna is right, but who is offering that — not Finn.

Steffy argues they should try and do everything possible to keep him here. Donna pleads with Ridge to listen to his daughter. Ridge is listening to all of them. He’s trying to figure this out. He collapsed today and if not for doctors, he’d be gone right now. He made his peace with that. Ridge questions if he’s playing God, what is Donna doing? “Modern medicine is amazing. Saves lives. But what if that life doesn’t want to be saved. My dad doesn’t want this. He told me he didn’t want this, he told you he didn’t want this, but here we are.” Ridge loves that Finn is trying to change the course of something but he doesn’t want him using his dad as a human experience. He’s been with his dad forever, “You know what I want. I want him to leave this earth with some dignity. Don’t you?” he asks Donna. “That’s my decision.” Everyone cries.
