There’s a new detective on Chicago P.D. The seventh episode of Season 11 introduced viewers to Jo Petrovic (played by Bojana Novakovic), and fans already have a lot of questions about her. Keep reading for everything there is to know about the new detective, including if she’s joining the Chicago P.D. squad permanently.
Chicago P.D. is NBC’s police procedural that follows the personal and professional lives of officers and detectives at the fictional 21st District of the Chicago Police Department. Created by Dick Wolf, the series first premiered in 2014 and exists within the One Chicago franchise, which also includes Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and the now-canceled Chicago Justice.
The Intelligence Unit has faced several personnel changes in recent seasons. Jay Halstead (played by Jesse Lee Soffer) left in Season 10 and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) will be exiting at the end of Season 11. As showrunner Gwen Sigan explained to TVLine in January 2024, the squad is “pretty lean right now.” She went on to reveal that the team might be getting some new recruits this season. “We’ve got space for another, and it would be really fun to have someone new come in. It always offers up so many opportunities for our existing characters to interact with someone new so yes, I hope so,” Sigan told the outlet.
Following the Season 11 episode “The Living and the Dead,” fans are wondering if Jo Petrovic might be the new recruit Sigan hinted at. Read on to learn more about the latest addition of the Chicago P.D. cast.
Who is Jo Petrovic on Chicago P.D.?
Who is Jo Petrovic on Chicago P.D.? Josephine “Jo” Petrovic is a Special Victims Unit detective that was called in to help the Intelligence Unit with a particularly harrowing case. Like her counterparts on Dick Wolf’s Law & Order: SVU, Petrovic specializes in crimes of sexual nature. She is also a great profiler and lends her talents to the team, helping them understand the behavior of a serial killer.
“Petrovic is extremely smart, but she has her own kind of secrets and demons that she’s dealing with,” Jason Beghe, who plays Sergeant Hank Voight, told TV Insider ahead of Petrovic’s debut. He added: “And socially, she’s somewhere a little further along on the spectrum than most, but she has a strong sense of herself and she’s a very astute and useful a member of the team at this point to help us solve the problems, figuring out who this serial killer is. She’s a gifted profiler.”
She is played by Bojana Novakovic. The Australian actress had recurring roles on Shameless and CBS’ Instinct and has guest starred on several other shows, including Westworld and MacGyver. She’s also appeared in the Margot Robbie-led films Birds of Prey and I, Tonya.
While its unclear if Novakovic was brought on as a recurring role, she will be in the upcoming episode “On Paper.” Per the episode’s official logline, Upton brings SVU detective Petrovic back into the fold to help with the investigation of a tender-age kidnapping. With Upton herself preparing to leave the Intelligence Unit, fans were wondering if Petrovic will stick around for good and replace her. It would certainly be helpful to have an SVU detective on hand for some of the trickier cases.
Based on the episode’s promo, however, Petrovic seems to be hiding something. Upton can be seen asking Voight, “What do you know about that SVU detective?” He responds that sh has the highest clearance rate, but “doesn’t put her name on cases.” Upton then spies on Petrovic, as the words “the profiler gets profiled” flash across the screen. The clip ends with Upton asking her, “Is there anything you want to tell me?” Petrovic answers: “You’re going to have to say it. If you want to accuse me of something, accuse me.”
It looks like the Intelligence Unit may have to call in Law & Order: SVU‘s Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) next time they need SVU’s help.
Chicago P.D. airs on NBC on Wednesdays starting at 10 pm EST and streams on Peacock.
