A new Hannah Swensen Mystery is coming to the Hallmark Channel, but it sadly won’t feature Cameron Mathison. Why is Cameron Mathison not in One Bad Apple: A Hannah Swensen Mystery? Keep reading to see why the Hallmark star will not be reprising his role in the franchise’s latest movie.
Mathison, who first rose to fame on All My Children as Ryan Lavery and currently stars on General Hospital as Drew Cain, has co-starred in the past seven Hannah Swensen movies alongside Days of our Lives alum Alison Sweeney. He portrayed lawman Mike Kingston, while Sweeney stars as baker-turned-sleuth Hannah Swensen. The series is based on the novels of the same name by Joanne Fluke.
In early February 2024, Hallmark announced that the eighth movie, One Bad Apple, will be premiering later this year, sans Mathison. Instead, Sweeney’s Wedding Veil and Days of our Lives co-star Victor Webster will be joining her.
The movie, which is based on Fluke’s novel Apple Turnover Murder, was also written and executive produced by Sweeney. Per the official synopsis, Hannah “has been asked to teach a baking class at the college in town, but her equipment is tampered with causing an explosion that the fire department rules an accident.” The synopsis continues: “Soon, a colleague ends up dead and Hannah begins to put together the puzzle of the mysterious circumstances surrounding the murder. Hannah leans on her friends and family to collect the breadcrumbs of foul play and put them together, and meets a different side of law and order when Lake Eden’s prosecuting attorney Chad Norton (Webster) enters her life.”
In a statement, Sweeney shared that she is thrilled to be reuniting with Webster. “I’ve always loved working with Victor — from our years in daytime to our work together on The Wedding Veil,” she said. “When writing the script and developing this movie, I knew he’d be a great addition to the Hannah Swensen family and am thrilled that he said yes.”
Fans, however, were confused about why Mathison is not reprising his role as Hannah’s former fiancé, whom she had just gotten back together with. So why is Cameron Mathison not in Hannah Swensen Mystery: One Bad Apple? Read on to find out.
Why is Cameron Mathison not in Hannah Swensen Mystery: One Bad Apple?
Why is Cameron Mathison not in Hannah Swensen Mystery: One Bad Apple? Alison Sweeney, who plays Hannah Swensen, seemly confirmed to TVLine in April 2024 that Mathison isn’t in One Bad Apple because he signed a multi-picture deal with Great American Media, a rival to Hallmark Channel. She also confirmed how Mike was written out of the franchise: He left for FBI training in Quantico. “That was the decision we made for Mike, because I come from a [daytime] soaps background and I love the philosophy of “never say never,” so you never know where Mike will turn up next. I love Cameron and I wish him all the best, but he decided to pursue a different career path [signing a multi-picture deal with Hallmark rival Great American Media], so here we are,” Sweeney said.
Prior to Sweeney’s confirmation, TVLine reached out to Hallmark and learned that the network chose not to include Mathison in the new movie in order to “stay true to the book series,” in which Hannah does not end up with Mike. The seventh installation, A Zest for Death, ended with Mike heading off to Quantico for FBI training, which will likely explain his absence in the new movie.
While this reason for Mathison’s exit makes sense, fans also suspected that his new deal with Great American Family has something to do with it. Shortly after A Zest for Death was released, Mathison signed a multi-picture deal with Hallmark’s rival company, which is headed by former Hallmark Media CEO Bill Abbott. Several other Hallmark stars left the network for GAF, including Danica McKellar, Trevor Donovan and Candance Cameron Bure, the latter of which serves as the company’s chief content officer.
