Will NCIS Sydney Have a Crossover With NCIS, NCIS Hawaii?

NCIS: Sydney, the latest show in the NCIS franchise, is already hit, which has fans hoping for a potential crossover with NCIS and NCIS Hawaiʻi. Will NCIS: Sydney take part in a three-way crossover? Keep reading to find out.

Set in Australia, NCIS: Sydney follows U.S. NCIS agents as they team up with the Australian Federal Police to keep naval crimes in check in “the most contested patch of ocean on the planet.” The series stars Olivia Swann as NCIS Special Agent Michelle Mackey and Todd Lassance as Sergeant Jim “JD” Dempsey, two clashing team leaders who must put aside their differences and learn how to merge their two teams. Rounding out the cast is Sean Sagar as NCIS Special Agent DeShawn Jackson; Tuuli Narkle as liaison officer Constable Evie Cooper; Mavournee Hazel as forensic scientist Bluebird “Blue” Gleeson; and William McInnes as forensic pathologist Dr. Roy Penrose.

NCIS: Sydney is the fifth spinoff in the NCIS franchise and it premiered in November 2023. The flagship series, the Washington, D.C.-set NCIS, first aired on CBS in 2003 and it is the third-longest-running scripted primetime TV show. It has spawned several spinoff series, including NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawaiʻi, and, of course, NCIS: Sydney. Of the spinoff series, only NCIS: Hawaiʻi and NCIS: Sydney remain on air, as NCIS: Los Angeles wrapped its 14-season run in May 2023.

Prior to NCIS: Los Angeles ending, fans were treated to the first-ever three-show crossover event between NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: Hawaiʻi. The three-hour episode featured stars across the franchise all sharing the screen, including NCIS: Los Angeles’ LL Cool J, NCIS: Hawai’i‘s Vanessa Lachey and NCIS‘ Wilmer Valderrama. With the addition of NCIS: Sydney, fans have even more hope for another crossover event in the franchise’s future. Will NCIS: Sydney have a crossover with NCIS and NCIS: Hawaiʻi? We have the answer below.

Will NCIS Sydney have a crossover with NCIS and NCIS Hawaiʻi?

NCIS: Sydney

Will NCIS Sydney have a crossover with NCIS and NCIS: Hawaiʻi? While we don’t know for sure, NCIS: Sydney showrunner Morgan O’Neil has not ruled it out. “Look — never say never, she said in a December 3 interview with TV Line. “You can make a fair bit of magic in TV these days.”

He went on to explain that the on-screen logistics would be the main concern, seeing as Hawaii is a 10-hour flight from Sydney, where NCIS Sydney is filmed, and the NCIS folks have a 14-hour flight from the Washington, D.C. area to Hawaii. “As I have said before, part of the thrill of a franchise like this is that it’s a universe that’s stitched together by a common DNA,” O’Neill said. “We’d love to crossover with those guys, and there would be some pretty exciting ways that you could crossover — with Hawai’i in particular, given that it’s relatively close … It’s definitely right there in the middle.”

If not a crossover episode, O’Neill did tease guest-star appearances from NCIS: Sydney cast members on other NCIS shows, before adding: “The audiences should feel like those crossover episodes, which are such fan favorites, are definitely top of our mind.” However, Season 1 of NCIS: Sydney was filmed back in May 2023 and the current seasons of NCIS and NCIS: Hawaiʻi just started filming after the months-long hiatus due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. Additionally, a second season of NCIS: Sydney hasn’t been confirmed yet, so fans may be a long ways away from a three-way crossover event.

In the meantime, there are plenty of other exciting updates within the franchise to look forward to, like the return of NCIS for Season 21 and NCIS: Hawaiʻi’s upcoming third season, which will feature new cast member LL Cool J from NCIS: Los Angeles. In a previous interview with TV Line, O’Neill also didn’t rule out a future cameo on NCIS: Sydney from another CBS procedural veteran: Alex O’Loughlin, who starred as Steve Mcgarrett in Hawaii Five-O. The 2010 reboot of the original 1968 – 1980 series ran for 10 seasons until it ended 2020.

“Look, we haven’t written off the possibility of him popping up,” O’Neill said when asked why the Australian native wasn’t cast on the Australian-set show. “Alex is a fantastic actor, as you would well know … So, I’m pretty sure Alex will pop up somewhere. He’s a fantastic actor and a good guy.”

NCIS: Sydney airs on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on CBS.
